Short answer

A generated shopping list is built from the recipes you plan, not typed by you. The app stores each ingredient as a name, quantity and unit, adds up the same ingredient across recipes, leaves off what's in your pantry and groups the rest by shop section. The hard part is matching ingredients written in different ways.

Contents

Step 1: Structured ingredients

"A splash of olive oil and the rice" can't be added to anything. Apps that make good lists store every ingredient as a name, a quantity and a unit: rice, 200, grams.

A chat model on its own re-reads its own paragraphs instead, which is how ChatGPT ends up listing "1 onion" four times unless you ask it to merge. For a structured app, the merge is arithmetic.

Step 2: Merging and unit conversion

Four recipes want onions: one, one, one and two. The list should say five. The harder cases:

  • Same ingredient, different names. "Onion, diced", "1 large onion" and "brown onion" are one shopping item. Matching them means knowing which names mean the same ingredient (normalisation), not comparing text.
  • Same ingredient, different units. 100g of butter and 2 tablespoons of butter need converting to one unit before they're added.
  • Counted versus weighed. Three onions plus 200g of onion has no right answer. A good app picks a convention and sticks to it.

To test an app, plan four recipes that share ingredients and read the list. Our shopping list comparison does this for the main UK apps.

Step 3: Pantry subtraction

You own rice. An app that knows that writes a shorter list.

Pantry features range from a manual tick-list of staples to scanning a photo of the shop. Most fail by drifting: the record changes only when you edit it, so within a fortnight it's out of date and the list leaves off things you need. The fix is a pantry that updates from what you already do: shopping goes in, cooking takes ingredients out.

Step 4: Aisle sorting

A list in recipe order sends you from vegetables to dairy and back three times. Sorted by section, you walk the shop once. Most decent apps do this, and the better ones let you reorder sections to match your supermarket.

How it works in Chop it

This one's mine. In Chop it, the week's recipes merge into one list automatically, wherever each recipe came from. There's one list style, which you read combined or by recipe. Pantry items are left out by default, and you can add them back.

Add shopping to the pantry by hand, or photograph a veg box or delivery with Scan ingredients (1 credit a scan), and ingredients come off when you mark a meal cooked. How the pantry works has the rest.

To buy, send the list to Whisk for online ordering, or use Shop at your supermarket to search Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda, Morrisons, Ocado or Waitrose line by line.

You can start from Chop it in ChatGPT too. Plan a week, connect your Chop it account, and the list saves as a list, not a paragraph to retype. The handoff opens a review page in Chop it with links to search your supermarket.

For the no-app route, our ChatGPT meal planning guide has the prompt that gets a merged, section-grouped list out of a plain conversation.

Quick answers

  • Why does my list include things I already have?
Usually the pantry record has drifted, or the names don’t match: the recipe says “brown onion” and the pantry says “onions”. Update the pantry after each shop and check the item isn’t stored under another name.
  • Does a generated list know pack sizes or prices?
Usually not. The list adds up what the recipes need, say 300g of mince, and you pick the pack in the shop. Apps tied to one supermarket, such as Cherrypick, build a priced basket. Chop it doesn’t: it sends the list to Whisk or searches six supermarkets line by line.
  • What happens to staples like salt and oil?
A good app treats them as things you already own, so they don’t come back every week. In Chop it, anything in your pantry is left off the list by default, and you can add it back when you’re running low.
  • Does Chop it charge for the shopping list?
No. Shop and the merged list are free. The optional Shop Ready tidy costs 1 credit, and so does a pantry photo scan.
