Short answer

The pantry is Chop it's record of what's in your fridge, freezer and cupboards. A shop goes in by photo or by hand, and marking a meal cooked takes its ingredients off. Reminders set by item type flag what to use soon, and your shopping list leaves out what you've already got.

Contents

A pantry you keep up by hand is one you give up on by February, so I built this one to keep up with what you already do: shopping and cooking.

How things go in

Use Scan ingredients to photograph a food shop, a veg box or a fridge shelf, then confirm what it found. If it takes a courgette for a cucumber, the right one is a tap away. A scan costs 1 credit, however many photos it uses. Adding items by hand is free and sometimes quicker.

Staples such as salt and olive oil don't need adding again every week.

How things come off

Mark a meal cooked and its ingredients come off the pantry. Where the amounts match, it takes off what the recipe used; otherwise the item steps down from Plenty to Some to Low. Nothing is deleted, and Undo on the after-cooking banner puts it all back. Cooking is the edit, so there's no bookkeeping.

How reminders work

Each item gets a reminder window for its type rather than one flat timer: fish two days, raw meat three, leafy herbs and soft fruit four, fresh dairy five, hardy vegetables a fortnight, and tins, dry goods and frozen food a year. These are planning defaults, not food-safety dates. Packaging and use-by dates always come first. Items are flagged to use before the window closes, and anything past it is marked, not deleted, so you decide what goes.

Chop it default pantry reminder windows by ingredient type

The flag arrives while the ingredient is still dinner, which is the only time a reminder is any use. Our guide to reducing food waste at home covers the rest.

For a proper sort-out, Pantry Check goes through the fridge, freezer and cupboards with the use-soon items first, and you keep or bin each one. It costs 1 credit and stays open for 24 hours.

What it feeds

Recipe suggestions can start from what you've got. And the shopping list leaves out pantry items by default, which is the difference between a list you trust and one you learn to ignore.

Quick answers

  • Can I use my pantry from ChatGPT?
Yes, once you connect Chop it in ChatGPT with the same account you use in the app. Without connecting, ChatGPT can search recipes and draft a week, but it can’t read or change your pantry.
  • How accurate is the pantry?
Roughly right, by design. It’s a helpful estimate, not a stock count. If a recipe’s ingredient doesn’t match the name of anything in your pantry, nothing comes off, so a quick look before a big shop is still worth it.
  • Does the pantry handle allergies?
No. It tracks what you have, not what’s safe for someone to eat. Foods to avoid and Dislikes live in Food preferences and steer suggestions, but Chop it isn’t an allergy tool, so always check labels.
